It follows Cillian O’Sullivan, the exiled black sheep of Ireland’s O’Sullivan crime family, as he returns home for the first time in thirteen years, and the girl he was forced to leave behind.Book Jaded Soul: A Mafia Romance (Kovalyov Bratva Book 3) Review :
Cillan is the big brother that makes you laugh. He’s the guy at family events that makes every moment lighthearted. He’s also the guy who would protect you with his last dying breath. Cillian meets Saoirse’s when he runs an errand to collect a debt from her Father. The moment he meets her it’s like fate knew two people were destined for each other. Unfortunately Fate can be a fickle …… and they are separated for thirteen years. Cillian is forced to leave Ireland and Saoirse marries the corrupt police officer Tristan. Fast forward to present time and Cillian is back in Ireland. He’s quite literally come back from the dead and wants to collect what belongs to him. The corruption in Ireland is at its all time high. Cillian is forced to take up the position that was deny to him many years ago. He rescues his lady love from the most unlikely places. He’s discovers that the events of the past weren’t as they seem. The two have to fight to get past the trauma of the years they miss. Cillian is honestly hilarious even at the most serious times. His sense of humor makes the book. I spent most of the book laughing and hoping they survive. Just a great series. I recommend starting with Artem’s book, but you can read this book as a stand-alone. KU subscription.I am rating this as average, because the story was okay but not great, the FMC was unbelievable even for a fiction romance, but the MMC was charming and hilarious throughout the entire story.***Spoiler from first 2 books***Readers of the first two books will remember the Irishman, Cillian, who was best friends with the male lead Artem and always had a smart comeback for whatever anyone said to him. He “dies“ in the first book, and you don’t see him in the second book until the end. This is the story of him recovering and going back to Ireland to reconcile with what happened between him and his family 13 years beforehand.***End spoiler***It kind of bothered me that the blurb to the story hints that Cillian goes back to Ireland to seek revenge because the woman, Saoirse, “ruined his life“ and he is going to cause her “pain”. Cillian is so sweet and funny I couldn’t imagine him being very mean to someone he cared about. I knew he wouldn’t physically harm her, but I thought it would be fun to watch him pretend he didn’t still care for her. Fortunately or unfortunately, he is never mean to her in the book, he uses his humor and charm and his compassion to woo her, his goal to make her stay with him never in doubt. The only tension between them comes from Saoirse, as she goes on and on between still loving him, thinking she can’t be with him, blaming her father for her sad and dangerous situation, and thinking about “secrets“ that I honestly don’t think we ever learned. There was one point where I thought she did have a sad secret that she needed to tell Cillian, but it never came up. The only places I really liked her were when she let down her guard and bantered with Cillian, and toward the end when she was really thinking about how far she would go to protect him.The story itself is kind of bland. As with the second book (I think), there are pretty many chapters where the MMC and the FMC are not together, which is unusual for a romance. His time recovering in Mexico was interesting, I wouldn’t mind seeing more of that, but once he gets to Ireland there is a lot of talking about things going wrong and getting into a war, but nothing really happens. The story only picked up around 85% when it became clear that there was going to be a war, and I thought the author did really well with the conflict. It was exciting, and because Cillian is Cillian, there was a blend of humor and somberness. As much as I did not care for the FMC and found the story so-so, though, it’s worth reading the book for Cillian‘s propensity to inject humor and sarcasm into every conversation. Some books I find myself rolling my eyes because the humor is kind of juvenile or over the top, but his constant preening and references to his beauty, talent, and every quality you can think of, was just sublime. I don’t think I’ve ever read a funnier character who is also dangerous and deadly. Honestly it was movie-quality dialogue for him, especially with his brothers or enemies. The action is written very nicely. There isn’t any melodramatic movement or. It’s dramatic, because it’s an action sequence in a romance, but it’s not melodramatic or cartoonish as some can be.It’s worth reading the book just to get to his “love letter to Saoirse”. I swooned, and I ain’t a swooner. If you liked the first two books, you will enjoy this. If you didn’t like the first two books, or one of the books, you may still like this as a standalone if you adored Cillian.
