Seriously. Only morbid fascination kept me going after the 50th euphemism for male genitalia - by about the 20th page, istg. Who finds that sexy??? How has this book gotten such good reviews? Why on earth was it so expensive for Kindle? If everyone is so hard up, there are countless -- actually *good* -- writers of m/m romance I can refer you to. It would be a *pleasure* to give you recs, because just knowing that there are people out here who think *this* is a) a good story, b) remotely hot or c) well written, makes my brain hurt.It is none of those things. Not only does it carry a very strong "gay for you" vibe (I hate that trope) slipped into what's advertised as friends-to-lovers, but in both language and content, it is the antithesis of everything I so love about queer romance: the dance of falling in love, the relatable emotion, and, yes, the well-written sex. This is misogynistic, trite, drawn out, and actually *offensive* more often than not in it's constant euphamisms. At one point, the writer refers to male genitalia as "piglet"; at another point, a "canon", and someone bleach my brain, please. It legit reads like a very long, horrifying write-in to Hustler in the 1970s. (Note that I didn't say Honcho, which probably at least had a slightly better clue to what made gay sex sexy.)Beyond that, the surrounding characters were awful. Just. The worst. They obviously existed for no reasons other than to prop up the main (badbadbadbad) romance, and to flesh out the book. In hopes people might think it was worth the price, maybe? (It's not.)I seldom dislike a book enough not to finish, but I think this is the first time I've hated one so much that I forced myself to finish out of sheer disbelief. Will never ever ever read this author again, and if this review doesn't get through to the people considering doing so, I can only pray that whatever god you believe in will have mercy on your souls.Excuse me, I need to go shower now. When I first saw the description for this, I laughed. Really, a firefighter who has to help his friend make porn because the mortgage is overdue? It sounded like such a setup. I saw the light, and Hot Head will always stand as the romance novel that sold me on reading romance novels.SO if you have not read it, you should know that Hot Head is a gorgeously written exploration of the grief that is unrequited love - and by love, I mean actual, full-fledged love developed over a decade, not a crush, not infatuation. Firefighter Griff Muir loves his straight coworker and best friend Dante Anastagio, the man who got him through anxiety, depression, and divorce after they both worked the horror of 9/11. There's literally nothing Griff wouldn't do for Dante. So when Dante needs Griff's help to save his beloved fixer-upper, and Griff can't come up with a better solution, Griff agrees to twist the knife in his heart just a little bit more by doing a porn video with Dante.For a book about two big, tough guys, this is one of the most emotional romances I have read so far. Watching Griff struggle to move on from the stuck-ness of his personal life while also working to figure out who he is if he loves Dante... oof. So much going on here! Possibly the best first kiss scene ever, too, and a happy ending that's to die for.
