I picked up this book thinking it would be a book of creepy anecdotes. I would have been happy with that alone, but it was a book about the art of pain and living. It was so beautiful. Sarah Krasnostein's beautiful, lyrical writing made me fall in love with Sandra in the first page. I continued to fall in love throughout this story and found myself crying in public places while I read and only began to understand life in the shoes of Sandra Pankhurst.I haven't been so satisfied by a book since "A Prayer for Owen Meeny." Sarah's writing has a breath-taking ability to illustrate the comedy of the absurd, a keen sense for philosophical thought, and a credible and enjoyable take on history. This is a must-read. I heard about this on the “Reading Glasses” podcast. I thought it was a novel about a trauma cleaner. I was wrong.It is the biography of a transwoman from Australia, the service trauma cleaners provide, the humanity of people we too often leave on the margins, and the resiliency of the human spirit.This book provided me some much needed perspective on trans people (a group that is sadly maligned far too often). Sandra’s story literally brought me to tears. It is not redemptive, but it is searing & honest. Sandra is flawed, but understandably so.Trauma cleaners can refer to those that clean up after homicides/suicides. In Australia (as told in this book), it is often of hoarders and those so paralyzed by mental illness they cannot maintain a home. It is easy to be sickened by the utter filth presented in these homes, but the author very skillfully shows us the humanity of these people on the margins. I wish the US had a social net that cared for those in this situation.In the end, this one provided a glimpse into some people on the margins. It provides perspective and education about often maligned people. It should be required reading for those who stand in harsh judgements of others.
